RENOVATION 1950s – Mid-Century Charm Restored | Greece

REVITALISATION OF A 1950s VILLA /Modern Comfort Meets Timeless Character

Nestled in the heart of an island town, this once-forgotten 1950s villa was deconstructed through selective disrepair and brought back to life with precision and respect. Our goal? To weave its charm into a rejuvenated island home that meets today’s standards for comfort, performance, and spatial elegance while adding an english country character to its interiors.

Preservation Through Adaptive Intervention

Rather than a full-scale rebuild, this project champions selective demolition, addtion and preservation. We retained original load-bearing masonry and the foundation, while carefully repairing structural cracks, and reinforcing the roof structure with concealed steel trusses—maintaining the home’s framework while ensuring resilience.

Comfort Systems Hidden in Plain Sight

Mechanical Upgrades :
New electric underfloor heating combined with a compact multi-zone heat-pump, brings zoned thermal control without visually intrusive elements.

Envelope Optimization :
The building envelope was enhanced with external thermal insulation composite system (ETICS), moisture membranes, and updated waterproofing to reduce thermal transmittance and prevent rising damp.

Glazing & Air-tightness :
Original windows were replaced with double-glazed, thermally-broken wooden frames, improving U-values while respecting the rhythm of façade openings.

Fluid Plan
INTERIOR EXPERIENCE

The interior was transformed from compartmentalized rooms into a semi-open-plan layout anchored by a central circulation corridor. We punctuated this with custom joinery wall panels, perforated or glazed. The living area was extended creating a flexible indoor-outdoor extension.

Material Palette
DETAIL CRAFTSMANSHIP

The design introduces British charm while keeping exteriors in harmony with the island town architecture.

Lime-based plaster
on original walls, paired with new whitewashed masonry façades for continuity.

Oak flooring
in bedrooms complements smooth tiled floors in the kitchen and bathrooms—both sealed and polished for durability.

Architectural details like traditional wooden ceiling, custom carpentry, perforated partition panels, bold tiling and stone exterior floors ensure a vivid visual language.
